About Southern Catalpa

Southern catalpa is a broad-crowned deciduous tree with very large, heart-shaped leaves and clusters of white, bell-shaped flowers marked with yellow and purple. Long, narrow seed capsules hang from the branches after flowering. [North Carolina Extension](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/catalpa-bignonioides/) describes its growth and landscape use, and the [Yavapai County Extension plant database](https://yavapaiplants.extension.arizona.edu/catalpa-bignonioides) records its identifying features and habitat. ## Landscape use Use this medium to large tree as a shade or specimen tree where its spreading, irregular crown can develop freely. The flowers attract native sphinx moths, and their caterpillars are a food source for birds and bats. Long capsules can be messy when they fall, so keep the tree away from paving and frequently used paths. ## Foliage and flowers Large green leaves are heart-shaped and arranged oppositely or in whorls. In late spring or early summer, clusters of white flowers open with yellow and purple markings inside. Narrow, cigar-like capsules mature later and can remain attached through winter. ## Siting and soil Plant in full sun or partial shade. It grows best in moist, well-drained soil but tolerates clay and a range of wet or dry conditions. The tree is fast-growing and may develop a crooked, spreading form as it matures. ## Maintenance Prune young trees selectively to establish strong structure. Remove dead limbs and clear fallen capsules when needed. Allow generous space for the irregular mature crown.
