Create design onlineAbout Heartland® Northern Catalpa
Heartland® is a selected northern catalpa with a narrow, upright crown. The breeder identifies the selection as Catalpa speciosa 'Hiawatha 2' and reports a mature height near 50 feet and spread near 25 feet in its [cultivar profile](https://jfschmidt.com/all-trees/heartland-catalpa/). The species’ large foliage, patterned white flowers, and long pods are described by [North Carolina Extension](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/catalpa-speciosa/common-name/northern-catalpa/).
## Form and seasonal interest
This deciduous tree has large, heart-shaped green leaves and uniform upright branching. In late spring or early summer, catalpa produces clusters of white, trumpet-shaped flowers with yellow and purple markings. Long, slender pods follow and can persist after the leaves fall. Its narrower outline can fit some sites where a broad-crowned catalpa would be difficult to place, though the mature tree still needs ample vertical and root space.
## Siting
Choose full sun and a location with room for the mature crown. Northern catalpa tolerates a range of soil conditions, including moist sites, but establishment is best supported by suitable moisture and drainage. The species’ wood can be brittle; keep large limbs away from buildings, parking, and other frequently occupied areas.
## Maintenance
Allow for seasonal leaf and pod cleanup. Inspect mature limbs periodically and use a qualified arborist for structural pruning. Heartland® is listed for USDA Zones 5–8; local growth rate and crown dimensions vary with conditions.
