About Creeping Mountain Lilac

Joyce Coulter is a low, fast-growing California ceanothus that works as a broad groundcover, with electric-blue flowers and glossy green foliage. It can spread across a large area while staying near three feet tall, making it useful for slopes, open banks, and other places where a flowering cover can occupy room. [UC Davis Arboretum](https://arboretum.ucdavis.edu/all-stars/ceanothus-joyce-coulter) identifies it as a California shrub and describes its size, bloom, siting, and care. ## Siting and seasonal interest Grow in sun or part shade; UC Davis notes that afternoon shade is helpful in warmer settings. The Arboretum records flowering in March and lists both moderate and low irrigation needs. Its blue to purple flowers attract bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects, and the low, spreading growth can suppress weeds once established. ## Maintenance UC Davis recommends little or no routine maintenance and advises pruning to shape after spring flowering during dry conditions. Leave space for the broad mature spread, and avoid unnecessary pruning before the spring display.
