About Cedar Rapids False Cypress

Cedar Rapids® false cypress is the Proven Winners selection *Chamaecyparis pisifera* ‘RutCham1’. It grows as a dense, pyramidal evergreen with green to lime-green feathery foliage and reaches about 25–30 feet tall by 12–15 feet wide. The mature spread makes it a substantial choice for a specimen position or a broad privacy screen; [Midwest Groundcovers lists the exact cultivar, PP36,620, mature size, and growth habit](https://www.midwestgroundcovers.com/chamaecyparis-cedar-rapids-11-3-25031.3g). ## Siting Choose full sun to part sun and moist, well-drained soil. Allow at least 12 feet of room where space permits. [The University of Tennessee Gardens inventory](https://utgardens.tennessee.edu/wp-content/uploads/sites/220/2026/04/2026_SPRING_PLANT_SALE_INVENTORY.pdf) also lists Cedar Rapids as a dense pyramidal evergreen with screening and specimen uses. ## Maintenance Water during establishment and extended dry spells. Proven Winners says its natural pyramidal form needs no routine pruning; a layer of mulch can help buffer the shallow roots, and an early-spring fertilizer is optional. The [Proven Winners profile](https://www.greatgardenplants.com/products/cedar-rapids-false-cypress) describes its zone range, deer resistance, water needs, and care.
