Horstmann Atlas Cedar Tree

Horstmann is a comparatively slow-growing Atlas cedar with powder-blue needles and a narrow, irregularly layered branching structure. Its early growth remains much smaller than a mature landscape tree, so plan for the long-term footprint while recognizing that published dimensions vary with age and growing conditions. ## Form and size The American Conifer Society reports approximately 6 ft tall by 3 ft wide at ten years and annual growth of about 6–8 inches. It describes a narrow tree with multiple leaders and horizontal layers of branches. These ten-year measurements should not be mistaken for the plant’s eventual mature size. ## Siting Grow in full sun or light shade in well-drained soil. Virginia Cooperative Extension gives Atlas cedar a species-level USDA range of zones 6–9. The powder-blue foliage and tiered silhouette suit a specimen planting where the branching can be seen from several angles. ## Maintenance Water during establishment and avoid waterlogged soil. Allow room for the tree’s eventual height and layered branching. Shape only as needed to preserve the natural outline, and do not shear the distinctive branch structure.
