Golden Deodar Cedar Tree

Golden deodar (*Cedrus deodara* 'Aurea') is an evergreen Himalayan cedar with bright gold-toned new needles. Its branches have the somewhat drooping outline typical of deodar cedar, and it suits a specimen planting with room to mature. ## Appearance and growing conditions The [RHS profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/93375/cedrus-deodara-aurea/details) describes an initially conical tree whose golden-yellow needles become greenish-yellow by late summer. Oregon State University’s [Landscape Plants account](https://landscapeplants.oregonstate.edu/plants/cedrus-deodara-aurea) describes gold-yellow new growth that greens in fall and becomes greenish-yellow in winter. Reported size differs: RHS gives 8–12 m tall and 4–8 m wide, while Oregon State gives about 3–7.5 m tall. Plan generous clearance and check local expectations for mature size. Both sources identify an evergreen conifer in Pinaceae. Oregon State gives USDA zone 6. The RHS H6 rating refers to UK conditions and should not be converted to a USDA zone. ## Maintenance Plant in full sun and drained soil, with room for a mature cedar. The RHS says no pruning is required. Avoid waterlogged sites and shelter young trees from sweeping winds.
