About Shalimar™ Deodar Tree

Shalimar is a selected form of Himalayan cedar noted for greater winter hardiness than typical seed-grown Deodar cedar. It remains a large evergreen tree, so its eventual canopy needs ample open space. The Royal Horticultural Society accepts the botanical name Cedrus deodara ‘Shalimar’, and Arkansas Extension traces the selection to Kashmir. ## Character and siting The [RHS cultivar listing](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/208597/cedrus-deodara-shalimar/details) confirms the cultivar identity. [Arkansas Extension](https://www.uaex.uada.edu/yard-garden/resource-library/plant-week/deodara-cedar.aspx) describes ‘Shalimar’ as a winter-hardy selection and probably the most cold-resistant form of the species. Its species-level guidance calls for excellent drainage and a fertile soil, and recommends using Deodar cedar as a specimen where a large tree has room to develop. These regional observations do not establish a universal hardiness zone for the cultivar. ## Maintenance Choose a sunny, open site with freely draining soil and avoid planting where water stands around the roots. Preserve the live catalog measurements and zone range until an exact-cultivar source provides comparable dimensions and a defined hardiness range. Protect young trees from sudden severe freezes, which can injure Deodar cedar.
