Create design onlineAbout Celosia Plant
Celosia is a diverse genus of herbaceous plants grown for vivid flower heads and, in some species, edible young leaves and stems. Depending on species and selection, plants may be annual or perennial, with flower heads shaped as plumes, wheat-like spikes, or crested forms.
## Form and Garden Use
Celosias vary widely in height, width, foliage, and flower color. They can be planted in groups, used as accents, or grown in containers. Choose a species or cultivar whose mature size and flower form suit the space rather than assuming every celosia shares the same dimensions.
## Siting and Growing
North Carolina State Extension recommends full sun and well-drained soil. Celosia tolerates many soil types but performs poorly in heavy, wet ground. Start seed indoors when desired and move plants outdoors after frost danger has passed. Some types readily reseed, while others are grown as seasonal bedding plants.
## Maintenance
Remove faded flower heads if you want to limit reseeding or keep the planting tidy. Growing season and overwintering behavior depend on the species and local climate. See [NC State Extension’s Celosia profile](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/celosia/) for the genus description, cultural guidance, and examples of its varied forms.
