Mountain bluet is a spreading, rhizomatous perennial with fringed blue flower heads above softly hairy, gray-green leaves. It suits sunny or partly shaded borders where its spring color and spreading habit can fill the front or middle of a planting ([RHS plant profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/3364/centaurea-montana/details)).
## Flowers and foliage
The blue heads have a reddish center and typically open from late spring into summer. Established plants may produce a lighter second flush after spent stems are removed. The foliage forms a low mat, while flowering stems rise above it; allow room for the plant to spread by underground stems.
## Growing conditions
Plant in full sun or partial shade and provide moist, well-drained soil. It tolerates dry to medium moisture once established, but grows more vigorously in richer, cooler conditions. Its garden spread can become broad, so place it where gradual colony formation is welcome.
## Garden use
Use mountain bluet in cottage borders, naturalized areas, and pollinator plantings. The flowers are suitable for cutting, and the blue heads provide a strong late-spring accent among grasses and other perennials.
## Maintenance
Remove spent flower stalks to tidy the clump and encourage possible late-season rebloom. Divide every two to three years if the center becomes congested or the colony grows beyond its space.
