About Snow in Summer 'Silver Carpet'

‘Silberteppich’, sold as Silver Carpet, is a compact selection of snow-in-summer with frosty silver foliage and white, star-shaped flowers in late spring. Use it as a low groundcover in a sunny, sharply drained site, allowing room for its spreading mat. ([Morton Arboretum](https://mortonarb.org/plant-and-protect/trees-and-plants/snow-in-summer/); [NC State Extension](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/cerastium-tomentosum/common-name/snow-plant/)) ## Growth and Placement The species forms a low mat about 6–12 inches tall, with compact Silver Carpet spreading more slowly than the species. The selection’s silvery foliage distinguishes it from the gray-green and green foliage described for snow-in-summer generally. Plant it along a sunny border edge, in a rock garden, or between stepping stones where spreading can be managed. ## Soil and Water Provide full sun and dry to moderately dry, well-drained soil. Avoid waterlogged ground, which can cause root problems. Snow-in-summer generally grows best where summers are cool; hot, humid weather can shorten its useful season. ([Morton Arboretum](https://mortonarb.org/plant-and-protect/trees-and-plants/snow-in-summer/)) ## Maintenance Remove spent flower stems after bloom to keep the mat tidy and reduce self-seeding. Trim the foliage if it declines in humid weather, and divide overgrown sections as needed.
