Blue paloverde is a spiny, multi-stemmed desert tree with blue-green, photosynthetic stems and yellow flowers. It is native to the Sonoran Desert, where its growth and flowering respond to the timing of rainfall.
## Form and setting
The tree can reach about 33 feet tall and is commonly found in desert washes, arroyos, and other dry habitats, though it also occurs on upland sites. Its stems continue photosynthesizing when the small leaves are absent, so the open branching structure remains visible through much of the year. The flat seed pods mature after flowering.
## Seasonal interest
Flowering usually follows rain from late March through May and can extend later in some years. Leaves may appear after summer rain and drop during drought. Established trees develop deep roots that can reach groundwater, which helps them withstand dry conditions; young plants still need attentive establishment watering.
## Maintenance
Plant in full sun with room for a broad canopy and avoid overwatering established plants. Give young trees regular water while roots establish, then adjust irrigation to local rainfall and soil drainage. The accepted name is Parkinsonia florida; Cercidium floridum is a documented synonym.
