About Redbud

Cercis is a genus of deciduous trees and shrubs commonly called redbuds, with simple, usually heart-shaped leaves and pea-family flowers. Species differ in native range, mature size, flower color and timing, and landscape needs, so those details should be matched to the particular redbud rather than assumed for the genus. ## Identifying the genus The flowers of many Cercis appear along branches and sometimes older stems, often before leaves expand; color and display vary among species and selections. The genus includes North American redbuds as well as species from Europe and Asia. Its fruit is a flattened legume, and the foliage commonly contributes a rounded, heart-shaped texture. ## Choosing a redbud Use the species or named cultivar record to compare hardiness, mature dimensions, light, soil, and water needs. Eastern redbud is one familiar North American species, while western, Mexican, Chinese, and European redbuds differ in their range and performance. This genus entry represents their shared classification, not a universal garden-size or hardiness recommendation. ## Maintenance Follow the care guidance for the selected species or cultivar. Check its mature spread and local hardiness before planting, and provide the moisture and exposure suited to that specific redbud.
