‘Ace of Hearts’ is a compact, deciduous Eastern redbud selected for its dense, dome-shaped crown and small, glossy heart-shaped leaves. It produces red-purple, pea-like flowers on the stems before the leaves open in mid spring.
## Size and use
This named selection is suited to smaller gardens where its rounded form can be seen. The Morton Arboretum reports about 12–15 feet in both height and spread; the U.S. plant patent describes the cultivar as a dwarf tree with a compact, domed canopy. Allow comparable width around the plant rather than crowding it against a wall or walkway.
## Growing conditions
Grow in sun or partial shade and in fertile soil that retains moisture while draining well. The record’s USDA zone range begins at 5; the Morton Arboretum notes that it is marginally hardy in zone 5, so colder sites may need a more sheltered location. Green foliage contrasts with the spring flowers.
## Maintenance
Water during establishment and during extended dry periods, especially in full sun. The cultivar patent says selective pruning is not needed to keep its characteristic dome; remove damaged or crossing branches as needed. Patent number and issue date are recorded as USPP 17,161, issued October 24, 2006.
