Texas Scarlet is a hybrid flowering quince valued for deep red flowers that appear on old wood in early spring. It is a deciduous, bushy shrub with green foliage and yellowish fruit later in the season. The exact selection is recorded by Denver Botanic Gardens as Chaenomeles × superba 'Texas Scarlet'.
## Flowers and placement
[Utah State University’s arboretum profile](https://extension.usu.edu/botanicalcenter/trees-of-varga-arboretum/texas-scarlet-flowering-quince) reports a mature size near 4 feet tall by 5 feet wide, zones 5–9, and red flowers from March through April. [Denver Botanic Gardens](https://navigate.botanicgardens.org/weboi/oecgi2.exe/INET_ECM_DispPl?NAMENUM=2921&startpage=1) also records red March–April flowering, deciduous foliage, and sun to partial sun. Use it as a specimen or in a mixed shrub border where its early flowers can stand out.
## Maintenance
Allow the shrub to flower before pruning; Utah State recommends light pruning after bloom. Both regional references describe tolerance of dry soil once established. Fruit may be edible, but this plant is grown primarily for its flowers and the fruit can be untidy.
