Fernbush, also called desert fernbush or desert sweet, is a western native shrub with finely divided, fernlike leaves and clusters of white flowers. Its size and flowering time vary by regional ecotype: northern plants tend to be smaller and flower earlier, while southern plants can grow much larger and flower later. The foliage may be evergreen in mild climates and deciduous where winters are cold.
## Siting and seasonal interest
The [University of Wyoming and USU Western Native Plants account](https://cwelwnp.usu.edu/westernnativeplants/plantlist_view.php?id=56&name=chamaebatiariamillefolium) describes a full-sun, well-drained shrub suited to dry landscapes, with aromatic foliage and a loosely mounding to spreading form. A [Utah Pollinator Habitat Program guide](https://ag.utah.gov/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/Chamaebatiaria-millefolium.pdf) lists zones 4–9, low water use, and white flowers in July and August. In colder northern areas, the western-native account reports late-spring bloom instead.
## Maintenance
Keep the root zone well drained and avoid frequent irrigation after establishment. The western-native account recommends occasional deep summer watering and selective spring or summer pruning to remove aging interior branches and maintain form; the Utah guide likewise recommends pruning only as needed.
