About Fernspray Gold Hinoki Cypress

‘Fernspray Gold’ Hinoki cypress is an evergreen conifer with arching, fern-like sprays colored green and golden yellow. Its upright outline and fine-textured branches create a bright focal point in a mixed border, rock garden, or open conifer planting. ## Size and form Published size descriptions vary with source and growing horizon. North Carolina State Extension lists the cultivar at about 6 by 3 feet, while Oregon State University describes plants around 6 feet tall and 4 feet wide at ten years. The Royal Horticultural Society gives a larger eventual range of 2.5–4 metres in both height and spread. Leave room for a substantial shrub or small tree and use the exact site conditions to guide spacing. ## Siting The RHS lists full sun and moist but well-drained soil. Oregon State recommends partial shade because intense sun can burn the foliage; in hot summer climates, shelter from harsh afternoon sun is prudent. Keep moisture consistent while maintaining drainage, and avoid planting where water stands around the roots. ## Maintenance Allow the branches to keep their natural arching form. Remove broken or misplaced shoots selectively, and protect young plants from drying winter winds in exposed locations. The sources describe an evergreen plant but do not establish a single mature size for all conditions.
