Create design onlineAbout Gracilis Nana Hinoki Cypress
Gracilis Nana is sold as a dwarf Hinoki false cypress with slow growth and dark-green, shell-shaped foliage. Its low, mounding outline becomes more conical with age, giving a small garden a lasting evergreen form.
## Form and size
[Maple Hill Nursery’s exact-selection listing](https://maplehillnursery.com/product/chamaecyparis-obtusa-gracilis-nana-dwarf-hinoki-false-cypress/) estimates 3–6 feet of height at ten years and identifies the plant as Zone 5. A [North Carolina State Extension profile under the reversed name 'Nana Gracilis'](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/chamaecyparis-obtusa-nana-gracilis/) describes the dwarf Hinoki cypress as 3–4 feet tall at ten years, ultimately reaching 6 feet or more with a 2–4 foot spread. Treat those as approximate ranges and allow room for its mature outline.
## Growing conditions
North Carolina State Extension recommends full sun to partial shade and moist, well-drained soil. Its profile lists small-space, Asian and rock gardens, containers, specimen planting, and bonsai among the uses. The alternate epithet order appears in that extension profile; the current nursery listing uses Gracilis Nana.
## Maintenance
The exact-selection nursery listing describes slow growth and a low mound that becomes conical over time. Choose a visible position where this gradual change in form can be appreciated, and remove dead or damaged growth as needed.
