Slender Hinoki false cypress is a slow-growing evergreen conifer with graceful, layered green sprays and a narrow pyramidal to conical outline. The cultivar Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Gracilis' stays more compact and full than the species and provides year-round structure in a specimen planting or large container. ## Form and size NC State Extension describes short, spreading branches and reports about 6 feet of growth after ten years, with a 3–4 foot spread. Loen Nursery lists a mature garden size of 10–15 feet high by 4–5 feet wide. The plant's eventual size depends on site and age, while the catalog's 3-meter height and 1.5-meter width remain within the ranges described by these sources. ## Growing conditions Grow in full sun or light to partial shade. It adapts to many soils but should not sit in wet, poorly drained ground; keep it moist during its first year. A protected site helps limit wind exposure. NC State's cultivar page includes USDA zones 4a–8b, while Loen Nursery lists zones 5–8. ## Landscape use Use this upright evergreen as a specimen, in small groups, near a foundation, or in a large container.
