Hinoki cypress (Chamaecyparis obtusa) is a large, evergreen conifer with a softly pyramidal outline and layered, horizontal branches. Its flat sprays of scale-like foliage give the tree a fine texture and a calm, architectural presence through every season.
## Form and siting
North Carolina State Extension describes the species as a 50–75-foot tree with a 10–25-foot spread, and notes that many cultivars remain much smaller. Use the species form where there is room for a substantial specimen; for tighter spaces, choose a named dwarf or compact cultivar rather than relying on frequent pruning. The species prefers full sun but tolerates some shade, and protection from strong wind can help preserve its branches.
## Soil and planting
Plant in moist, fertile, well-drained soil. The species adapts to different soil types when drainage is good, but avoid persistently waterlogged sites. Allow the canopy to develop naturally and keep neighboring plants from crowding its broad, horizontal limbs.
## Maintenance
Water newly planted trees while they establish, then maintain even moisture during extended dry weather. Check for root rot in poorly drained soil and inspect foliage for bagworms or other pests noted by Extension. Prune only to remove damaged growth or correct a specific structural problem; routine shearing obscures the natural layered form.
