Lemon Thread is an evergreen false cypress valued for bright yellow, fine-textured foliage. Sources describe it both as a low, flattened cushion and as a more upright conical shrub, so its mature outline can vary by source and growing conditions.
## Form and garden use
The [American Conifer Society database](https://conifersociety.org/conifers/chamaecyparis-pisifera-lemon-thread) describes a slow-growing dwarf selection with filamentous and scale-like foliage, reaching about 4 feet tall and 3 feet wide after ten years. [Oregon State University](https://landscapeplants.oregonstate.edu/plants/chamaecyparis-pisifera-lemon-thread) describes an upright semi-dwarf form that may reach 12 feet and notes its bright yellow thread-like branchlets. These differing accounts support allowing space and checking the plant’s actual growth in your site.
## Siting and soil
Part shade is a prudent location for the yellow foliage, which Oregon State reports may burn in full sun. Use well-drained soil and shelter the plant from strong winds; the [Purdue Arboretum’s Sawara false cypress notes](https://www.arboretum.purdue.edu/explorer/plant_genus/chamaecyparis-falsecypress-cypress-alaska-cedar-cedar-alaska/) advise good drainage and wind protection for the species.
## Maintenance
Keep the root zone evenly moist during establishment, while allowing excess water to drain away. Pruning is rarely required; remove damaged shoots and preserve the plant’s natural form rather than shearing deeply into older foliage.
