About Chamaedorea

*Chamaedorea* is an accepted genus of palms in the family Arecaceae, native from Mexico through Central America and tropical South America. Kew lists 108 accepted species in the genus, which includes a broad range of forms and habitats ([Kew genus account](https://powo.science.kew.org/taxon/urn:lsid:ipni.org:names:331165-2)). ## Species and placement Species-level identity matters when choosing a palm because mature size and growing requirements vary. Clemson Extension’s indoor palm guide discusses several *Chamaedorea* species and gives different form and care notes for individual palms ([Clemson Extension guide](https://hgic.clemson.edu/factsheet/indoor-palms/)). ## Maintenance Use species-specific information to plan light, watering, and space. The genus name alone does not identify a plant’s mature dimensions or establish its outdoor hardiness; confirm the species before choosing a permanent landscape location.
