Fireweed is a hardy, upright perennial with narrow willow-like leaves and spikes of purplish-pink flowers from summer into autumn. It is best suited to a meadow, restoration planting, or other open space rather than a tightly controlled mixed border. ## Siting and spread Full sun supports flowering, and the species tolerates a broad range of soil textures and moisture conditions. It commonly colonizes open or disturbed ground. Allow space for the colony or use a contained area where rhizomatous spread needs to be limited. ## Maintenance Remove unwanted shoots where spread must be controlled. Deadheading before seed dispersal can reduce self-seeding, though it will not prevent underground spread. Leave some flower heads where natural reseeding is welcome.
