Create design onlineAbout Houailou Red Leaf Palm
Houailou red leaf palm is a solitary, emergent New Caledonian palm with a tall gray trunk, yellow-green crownshaft, and large, arching pinnate leaves. Its strong architectural form suits spacious tropical or subtropical gardens.
## Identity and appearance
NParks treats *Chambeyronia houailouensis* as a distinct species described in 2021 and lists *Chambeyronia macrocarpa* ‘Houailou’ and *Chambeyronia* ‘Houailou’ as earlier horticultural names. It is endemic to New Caledonia and can reach 10–25 m tall. Its stiff, arching fronds and yellow-green crownshaft are distinctive; new fronds are green and rarely bronzy.
## Siting and soil
NParks describes a tropical palm of primary rainforest and riverine habitats. It grows in full sun or semi-shade, prefers moderate water, and does well in well-drained loamy soil. Young plants tolerate partial shade, while mature plants grow better in full sun. Allow substantial room for the tall trunk and long fronds.
## Maintenance
Keep the soil evenly moist during establishment and avoid waterlogging. Protect young plants from cold and remove only dead leaves. Check overhead clearance and nearby structures before planting because mature palms can exceed 10 m.
