Create design onlineAbout Chardonnay Pearls® Deutzia
Chardonnay Pearls® is the Proven Winners name for Deutzia gracilis ‘Duncan’. This compact shrub combines bright chartreuse foliage with white, pearl-like buds that open into spring flowers, and the breeder lists a mature height and spread of 1.5–3 feet.
## Light and soil
Plant it in full sun or part sun; in warm southern climates, some shade helps protect the foliage from burning. Moist, well-drained soil is preferred, with average watering after establishment. Its foliage remains attractive after the spring bloom, extending the display beyond the flowers.
## Garden placement
The breeder lists Chardonnay Pearls for borders, foundations, hedges, and specimen planting. Allow up to about three feet of space in each direction, and use it where the chartreuse leaves can brighten a planting. The white buds remain visible for a time before opening, so the flower display develops gradually rather than appearing all at once.
## Maintenance
The plant maintains its compact size naturally. If trimming is desired, prune in spring after flowering; routine fertilizing is typically unnecessary. The cultivar is listed for USDA zones 5–8.
