About Chinese Fringe Tree

Chinese fringetree is a small deciduous tree known for airy clusters of narrow white petals in spring. It offers a floral display followed by blue-purple fruit and peeling bark, and it can grow single- or multistemmed. [North Carolina Extension](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/chionanthus-retusus/) confirms the deciduous habit and white spring flowers; the [Arnold Arboretum](https://arboretum.harvard.edu/arnoldia-stories/chionanthus-retusus-the-chinese-fringetree/) describes mature trees around 20–30 feet with a similar spread and substantial variation among specimens. ## Flowers and seasonal interest The fragrant flowers appear at branch tips and can cover the canopy; at the Arnold Arboretum they bloom from late May through mid-June. Blue-purple fruit ripens in fall, adding a second season of interest. The exact timing varies with climate. ## Placement and growing conditions Use Chinese fringetree as a specimen, small shade tree, or flowering accent where there is room for a broad crown. It grows in full sun or partial shade and adapts to a wide range of soils. The species tolerates moderate summer drought, though consistent moisture during establishment helps roots settle in. Its mature form may be single- or multistemmed, so allow the crown to develop naturally. ## Maintenance Water young trees during dry spells and keep competing turf or weeds away from the root zone. Prune only to remove damaged or crossing limbs, preferably after flowering, and preserve the natural branching structure.
