About Columnar Chinese Fringe Tree

Tokyo Tower is a narrow, upright selection of Chinese fringetree for sites where a compact crown is useful. It keeps the species’ fringed white flowers and glossy foliage, while its columnar branching gives it a more vertical outline than the broader species. [Utah State University’s arboretum profile](https://extension.usu.edu/botanicalcenter/trees-of-varga-arboretum/tokyo-tower-fringe-tree) lists a mature size of 12–15 feet tall by 4–6 feet wide and USDA zones 5–9. ## Flowers and seasonal interest Fragrant white flowers appear in spring, followed by blue fruit. Leathery green leaves turn yellow in fall, and the bark exfoliates to add winter texture. The exact bloom date varies with local conditions. ## Placement and water Use Tokyo Tower as a specimen, narrow screen, or vertical accent in full sun or part shade. The columnar habit makes it useful near walks or in smaller yards, but allow the full 4–6-foot spread. It prefers moist, acidic soil and does not tolerate prolonged dry periods; water during establishment and during extended dry weather. ## Maintenance The selection needs little pruning. Remove damaged or crossing branches as needed, and avoid shearing the crown so its natural narrow form remains intact.
