About Pink Dawn Desert Orchid (Chitalpa)

Pink Dawn is a fast-growing, deciduous chitalpa with a spreading, often multi-stemmed outline and long clusters of pale lavender-pink, trumpet-shaped flowers with yellow throats. Give it full sun and room for a canopy about 25 feet tall and wide; established trees need only occasional watering in suitable Southwestern landscapes. [Monrovia](https://www.monrovia.com/pink-dawn-chitalpa.html) lists USDA zones 6–9 and late spring through summer bloom. ## Landscape Use Use Pink Dawn as a flowering specimen or accent where its open canopy and seasonal flowers can be seen from a patio or garden path. The mature spread calls for generous clearance from buildings, walks, and overhead wires. The tree is deciduous, so its bare winter branching becomes part of the view; choose a site where leaf drop and flowers fit nearby paving and planting beds. The cultivar identity, *×Chitalpa tashkentensis* ‘Pink Dawn’, is retained. ## Growing Conditions Plant in full sun. Monrovia describes occasional watering after establishment and suitability for many soils and climates of the Southwest. Water newly planted trees regularly while roots establish, then adjust irrigation to soil drainage and local rainfall. Mature size and fast growth are supported by the cultivar listing; the exact canopy varies with climate, soil, pruning, and irrigation. ## Maintenance Allow the branching structure to develop, removing crossing, damaged, or poorly placed limbs while young. Keep routine cuts selective and avoid topping, which spoils the canopy form. Check the tree after storms and keep the planting space clear enough for its mature spread.
