About Cityline Mars Bigleaf hydrangea

Cityline® Mars (‘Ramars’) is a compact, deciduous bigleaf hydrangea with glossy green leaves and mophead flower clusters edged in white. Its blooms can be pink or violet-blue as soil pH and available aluminum change, and it flowers in summer on old wood. The breeder lists a mature height and spread of 1 to 3 feet, USDA zones 5–9, and part sun to sun; afternoon shade is useful in hot climates. ## Landscape use Spring Meadow Nursery describes this compact selection for flower and cottage gardens, foundation plantings, low hedges, edging, and seaside gardens. Its long-lasting blooms are also suited to cut flowers, while [Proven Winners](https://www.provenwinners.com/plants/hydrangea/cityline-mars-bigleaf-hydrangea-hydrangea-macrophylla) lists container and mixed-border use. ## Growing conditions Give it part sun and moist, well-drained soil. Soil pH and aluminum availability can shift bloom color, so test soil before trying to change it. [NC State Extension](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/hydrangea-macrophylla/) describes bigleaf hydrangeas as best in dappled or partial shade and notes their flowers form on previous-year stems. ## Maintenance Keep the root zone evenly moist without leaving it waterlogged, and mulch to help conserve moisture. Avoid routine pruning because this selection flowers on old wood; remove dead wood, and if shaping is needed, do it just after flowering. In hot climates, protect foliage from strong afternoon sun. See [Spring Meadow Nursery’s growing guidance](https://springmeadownursery.com/plantfinder/cityline-mars-37610) for the cultivar profile and care notes.
