About Bernadine Clematis

Bernadine is the trade name for Clematis ‘Evipo061’, a compact, deciduous climbing clematis in the Boulevard Series. It bears pale lavender-blue tepals with pinker midveins and flowers from early summer into early autumn. The trade name is retained for the catalog record while the scientific name uses the documented cultivar denomination. ## Flowers and size The [RHS Bernadine profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/319897/clematis-bernadine-evipo061-boulevard-series-el/details) identifies the selection as Clematis [Bernadine] (‘Evipo061’) and lists a mature height of 1–1.5 m and spread of 0.5–1 m. These ranges convert to about 3.3–4.9 ft high and 1.6–3.3 ft wide. The current 2.5 m height point is outside that exact selection’s stated range, so it is unresolved rather than replaced by an invented point; the width point of 1 m remains at the source’s supported upper bound. ## Siting Grow in partial shade in moisture-retentive, well-drained soil. The RHS recommends planting the crown 5–8 cm below the soil surface and keeping the roots cool and shaded. A patio container or supported border planting suits its compact size. ## Maintenance For the early flower display, remove dead and damaged stems before spring growth and trim remaining stems to strong buds. The RHS classifies this as pruning Group 2; a harder Group 3 cut is an easier-care option but changes the early display.
