About Bourbon Clematis

Bourbon is the trade name for compact large-flowered clematis Evipo018. Its flowers have red tepal edges that shade into a purple center, with yellow anthers, and open in early to mid-summer. The [RHS profile for Bourbon](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/215552/clematis-bourbon-evipo018-el/details) records this Evipo018 identity and its flowering details. ## Flowers and placement RHS lists mature height around 5–8 ft and spread around 2–3 ft. Use it on a trellis, wall support, or in a patio container where the large flowers can be seen close by. Give its stems a sturdy support to climb. ## Growing conditions Plant in full sun or partial shade in moisture-retentive, well-drained soil. Keep the roots and base cool with nearby groundcover or a light mulch, while allowing the top growth to reach the light. Water regularly during dry weather, especially in pots. ## Maintenance Bourbon is listed in pruning group 2. In early spring, remove dead or damaged stems and trim remaining stems to strong buds. RHS also describes a harder group 3 option for easier care; select a pruning approach with the flowering display in mind.
