About Candy Stripe Clematis

Candy Stripe is a deciduous clematis with pale pinkish-purple flowers marked by a dark pink central stripe and dark red stamens. The [RHS profile for Candy Stripe](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/52056/clematis-candy-stripe-el/details) lists flowering from late spring to early summer, then again in early autumn. ## Flowers and placement This climbing cultivar reaches about 8–13 ft tall and 3–5 ft wide. Train its stems across a trellis, fence, or wall support, where the striped flowers can be viewed nearby. RHS lists container growing as an option when the pot is large and deep enough. ## Growing conditions Choose full sun or partial shade and moist but well-drained soil. Clematis grow best when their stems have access to light and their roots remain cool and moist; shade the base with nearby plants or mulch. Provide a sturdy support and water regularly while the plant establishes. ## Maintenance Candy Stripe flowers on both previous-year and new growth, so avoid cutting every stem down before the first flush. Follow clematis pruning group 2 guidance, and remove dead or damaged growth in early spring. Water container plants more often than clematis growing in the ground.
