About Cardinal Wyszynski Red Clematis

Cardinal Wyszynski is a deciduous climbing clematis with large dark-pink to red flowers that show a grey-pink reverse. The [RHS profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/83479/clematis-cardinal-wyszynski/details) records the cultivar under its Polish spelling, Kardynal Wyszynski, and describes two flowering periods: late spring and summer, then early autumn. ## Flowers and placement RHS lists a mature height of about 8–13 ft and spread of about 5–8 ft. Train it over a sturdy trellis or wall support, or use it in a large patio container. The repeat flush brings color across several parts of the growing season. ## Growing conditions Grow in full sun or partial shade in moist, well-drained soil. Clematis roots prefer cool, moist conditions, so shade the base with plants or mulch while the climbing stems reach light. Water consistently during establishment and dry weather. ## Maintenance This cultivar is listed in pruning group 3. Cut back hard in late winter to encourage vigorous new stems and later flowers. Its mature spread is much greater than the previous width point, so allow room for a broad support.
