About Daniel Deronda Clematis

Daniel Deronda is a deciduous, large-flowered clematis with dark violet-blue blooms that may be single or semi-double in the first flush. The RHS describes flowers from late spring to early summer, followed by single flowers in late summer. ## Flower and form Flowers can reach about 20 cm across, with pointed sepals that are paler on the reverse and cream-colored stamens. This climbing cultivar works on a trellis or other support; the RHS lists a mature height of 1.5–2.5 m and spread of 0.5–1 m. ## Growing conditions Choose full sun or partial shade and moist but well-drained soil. Keep the roots cool and moist, especially in hot or dry weather, and guide young stems onto their support. A little shade around the root area can help while the flowering stems receive light. ## Maintenance The RHS places Daniel Deronda in pruning Group 2. In late winter or early spring, remove dead or weak stems to healthy buds; after the first flush, a light trim below spent blooms can encourage later flowers.
