About Dr. Ruppel Pink Clematis

Dr. Ruppel is an early large-flowered clematis with deep rose-pink blooms marked by a darker central stripe. Clematis on the Web records flowering in May, June, and September, while Guernsey Clematis Nurseries describes late-spring to early-summer and late-summer to early-autumn flowering. ## Flower and form Flowers are about 15–20 cm across, with white filaments and cream-beige anthers; occasional early flowers may be semi-double. The plant climbs on a trellis or other support and is suitable for container culture. Published height estimates differ: the specialist register gives 2.5–3 m, while Guernsey lists 2 m, so use a flexible support and allow room for a several-foot vine. ## Growing conditions Grow in sun with moist, well-drained soil and keep the roots cool and evenly moist. Clematis in containers need more regular attention to watering because their compost dries faster. ## Maintenance The RHS places Doctor Ruppel in pruning Group 2. Retain a framework of older stems, remove weak growth in late winter or early spring, and lightly prune after the first flush if you want to encourage another round.
