About Double White Clematis

Duchess of Edinburgh is an early large-flowered clematis known for double white flowers, sometimes tinged green, followed by semi-double white flowers later in summer. The RHS lists full sun or partial shade and classifies this cultivar in pruning Group 2. ## Flower and form The early-summer blooms are about 10–13 cm across, with a later semi-double flush. This deciduous climber suits a trellis, wall, or shrub support; the RHS lists a mature height of 2.5–4 m and spread of 0.5–1 m. ## Growing conditions Plant in moist but well-drained soil and keep the root zone cool and moist. Clematis stems climb by twining leaf stalks, so position a suitable support where new growth can reach it. A lightly shaded root area can help while the stems and flowers receive sun. ## Maintenance For Group 2 pruning, retain a framework of older stems, remove dead or weak shoots in late winter or early spring, and trim selected stems below the first flush if you want to encourage later flowers. Avoid hard pruning, which can remove the early flowering wood.
