Clematis ‘Elsa Späth’ is a deciduous, large-flowered climber with mauve-blue flowers about 12–16 cm across. The [RHS profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/97605/clematis-elsa-sp%C3%A4th-el/details) places its flowering from late spring into summer and assigns pruning group 2. The RHS lists an ultimate height of 2.5–4 m and spread of 0.5–1 m; the catalog’s existing 2.5 m height point remains within that range.
## Growing Conditions
Grow in full sun or partial shade in moisture-retentive, well-drained soil. Keep the root zone cool and shaded with neighboring plants or a layer of pebbles, while allowing the flowering stems to reach sun. Train the climbing stems on a suitable support and space them to show the large flowers.
## Maintenance
Group 2 clematis flower on short shoots from the previous year’s growth; some produce a later flush on new growth. In late winter or early spring, remove dead or weak stems and lightly shape the framework. After the first flush, selectively shorten stems to strong buds or a side shoot to encourage later flowers. Follow the [RHS group 2 pruning guide](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/clematis/group-two-pruning-guide) for timing and technique.
