About Charmaine™ Double Red Clematis

Charmaine™ is a large-flowered clematis selection sold under the Raymond Evison trade name and code Evipo 022. Its rich red to purplish-red flowers are semi-double or double early in the season and may be single later, giving a changing display from spring into summer and sometimes a repeat in autumn. ## Flowers and placement The [RHS profile for Evipo022](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/343469/clematis-charmaine-evipo022-el/details) describes a deciduous climber with purplish-red, semi-double or single flowers through summer, and gives a mature height range of 1.5–2.5 m and a spread of 0.5–1 m. The [Raymond Evison North American catalogue](https://donahuesclematis.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/2024-WHOLESALE-CATALOG.pdf) lists Charmaine as EVIPO022 in its Regal collection of double-flowered clematis. This cultivar suits a wall, trellis, or shrub support; keep the crown and roots cool while the foliage receives light. ## Growing conditions Give the foliage sun or partial shade while keeping the crown and roots cool. The RHS recommends moist but well-drained soil and lists chalk, clay, loam, and sand as suitable soil types. The breeder’s Regal collection guidance also supports container growing and repeat flowering. ## Maintenance The RHS lists this as Group 2, while the breeder’s Regal guidance recommends reducing top growth by about one third in late winter or early spring. Remove dead or damaged stems at that time, keep the root zone shaded, and water during dry periods, especially in a container.
