About Leatherflower

Mongolian Gold is an accepted cultivar of Clematis fruticosa, a shrub species native to Mongolia and northern China. The RHS describes this selection as an erect, compact, deciduous woody shrub with dark green leaves and golden-yellow nodding bell flowers from July through September; both mature height and spread are listed as 0.5–1 m. ## Flowers and habit Unlike most garden clematis grown as climbers, Mongolian Gold forms an upright shrub. Its nodding yellow bells appear in summer and continue into early autumn, making it a useful flowering accent in a border or informal garden. ## Siting and soil The [RHS plant profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/269520/clematis-fruticosa-mongolian-gold/details) recommends full sun or partial shade and moist but well-drained soil. Keep the crown and root zone cool and shaded at planting, following the RHS clematis cultivation guidance. The RHS lists a 0.5–1 m mature range for both height and spread; the display labels retain that range in feet without choosing an unsupported numeric point. ## Maintenance This is RHS pruning group 1; after flowering, prune only as needed to manage shape or remove unwanted growth. Water during dry periods while the plant establishes, and avoid persistently waterlogged soil.
