Create design onlineAbout General Sikorski Purple Clematis
General Sikorski is an early large-flowered deciduous clematis with mauve-blue blooms, a faint red or pink bar, and pale stamens. It flowers first on older stems and can rebloom later on new growth, adding vertical color to a support or wall.
## Cultivar and flowers
Clematis on the Web records the cultivar as 'General Sikorski' and describes large mauve-blue flowers with creamy-white filaments, yellow anthers, and a faint red or pink bar. Its flowering period is June through September. The RHS profile places it among early large-flowered clematis and recommends Group 2 pruning, which preserves enough older stems for the early flush.
## Size and conditions
The RHS lists a mature range of 2.5–4 metres high and 1–1.5 metres wide. Clematis on the Web gives an approximate height of 2–3 metres; the existing 2.5-metre catalog point falls within both sources. Keep the vine in moist, well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade. Clematis on the Web lists USDA zones 4–9.
## Landscape use
Train the climbing stems on a trellis, fence, pergola, or wall. The RHS also suggests patio containers and wall-side borders.
## Maintenance
Keep the root zone cool and moist, with free drainage. Prune lightly in late winter or early spring, removing weak or damaged stems while retaining sound older growth for flowering.
