About Creamy Yellow-White Clematis

Guernsey Cream is a deciduous, large-flowered clematis with full creamy-yellow to white blooms and yellow anthers. It flowers in late spring and early summer, then may produce a smaller, paler flush in late summer. ## Cultivar and flowering The cultivar was raised by Guernsey Clematis Nurseries and introduced in 1989. Its flowers have overlapping tepals and are about 4–5 inches across in the nursery descriptions. The plant is compact for a large-flowered vine and is especially suitable for a container or a small trellis. ## Size and conditions Sources list mature height from 6–8 feet to about 2.5 metres, and Spring Hill gives a spread of 36–48 inches. The existing 2.5-metre height measurement is retained as a rounded source-supported point; the labels report the published ranges. The plant is listed for USDA zones 4–9. Grow in full sun or partial shade in moist, well-drained soil. ## Landscape use Use Guernsey Cream on a trellis, obelisk, wall, or container where its creamy flowers can be seen close up. Plant the roots in a cool location and give the stems room to climb. ## Maintenance This Group 2 clematis blooms on older stems, so avoid cutting the whole vine back each year. Remove damaged growth and make light adjustments in early spring; maintain moisture without leaving the roots in saturated soil.
