Create design onlineAbout Hagley Hybrid Clematis
Hagley Hybrid is a compact, deciduous clematis that produces shell-pink flowers with wine-red anthers from midsummer into early autumn. It climbs by leaf stalks and suits a shaded support where the flowers retain their soft color.
## Cultivar and flowering
Clematis on the Web lists 'Pink Chiffon' as the U.S. name for 'Hagley Hybrid'. The RHS describes single shell-pink flowers about 10–15 cm wide, while the clematis register gives a similar late-season flowering period. The cultivar blooms on current-season growth and is commonly treated as a Group 3 clematis.
## Size and growing conditions
The RHS gives a height range of 1.5–2.5 metres and a spread of 1–1.5 metres; Clematis on the Web gives an approximate height of 2–3 metres. These exact-cultivar sources contradict the catalog's 6–8-inch height, so the unsupported numeric point is cleared and the labels use the RHS ranges. Clematis on the Web lists USDA zones 4–9. Grow in partial shade and moist, well-drained soil.
## Landscape use
Train the vine on a fence, arbor, trellis, or wall. It also suits containers and cottage-garden borders, with cool shade around the roots.
## Maintenance
Prune as Group 3 in late winter or early spring, cutting back to healthy low buds. Keep the root area cool and moist, and avoid strong midday sun that can fade the flowers.
