About Hakuookan Purple Clematis

Hakuookan is a deciduous clematis with deep violet-blue flowers, pale purple bars, and prominent light-colored stamens. The accepted cultivar spelling is 'Hakuōkan', with 'Hakuookan' as an accepted alternative; the frequently used form 'Haku Ookan' is not accepted in the RHS register. ## Cultivar and flowers The RHS International Clematis Register describes single or semi-double flowers in May and June, followed by single flowers in August and September. The pointed, overlapping tepals are deep violet to blue-purple, sometimes marked with a paler bar, and the foliage is dark green. Digging Dog Nursery notes the large flowers and repeat autumn display. ## Size and conditions Digging Dog lists a height of 6–9 feet and describes the width as spreading without a fixed measured spread. T&L Nursery gives a similar height range and lists the selection for zone 4. Grow in full sun or partial shade, with a cool root zone and well-drained soil. ## Landscape use Provide a support such as a trellis, arbor, fence, or shrub. The compact vine suits containers and its large flowers can be used as cut flowers. ## Maintenance Keep roots cool and evenly moist while avoiding waterlogged soil. Allow the stems to climb and remove only damaged growth unless a light pruning is needed to control the support.
