Clematis ‘Horn of Plenty’ is a vigorous deciduous climber grown for very large, wavy-edged flowers in reddish mauve-blue shades. Its blooms can reach about 20 cm across and make a strong display from late spring into summer, depending on growing conditions. The [RHS profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/92323/clematis-horn-of-plenty-el/details) records its size, color and pruning group; [Clearview](https://www.clearviewhort.com/product/honor-of-plenty/) also describes this selection as rosy purple and late flowering.
## Flowers and placement
Give the stems a sturdy trellis, fence, or pergola to climb. This cultivar grows in full sun or partial shade and prefers moisture-retentive, well-drained soil. Keep the root area cool with mulch or low planting. Its generous flowers suit a prominent wall-side border or a large support where the blooms can be seen closely.
## Size and pruning
Allow a mature height of about 2.5–4 m and spread of 1–1.5 m. The Royal Horticultural Society places ‘Horn of Plenty’ in pruning group 2, which flowers on retained older stems and new growth. In spring, remove dead or weak stems and trim to strong buds while retaining healthy framework for flowering.
## Maintenance
Water through dry spells, especially during establishment and flowering, and avoid letting the root zone become parched. Clematis sap can irritate skin; wear gloves when pruning.
