About Purple-Blue Clematis

Lord Neville is an older clematis cultivar with deep-blue flowers marked by purplish bars and veining. The flowers have wavy edges and purple-red stamens, and may appear in two flushes. This deciduous climber can reach about 3 m and benefits from a support that accommodates its twining stems. ## Flowers and placement The [RHS profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/63662/clematis-lord-nevill-el/details) lists ‘Lord Neville’ as a synonym of the accepted ‘Lord Nevill’ and describes blooms from late spring to early summer, with another flush in late summer. It gives a height of 2.5–4 m and spread of 1.5–2.5 m, and recommends full sun or partial shade with moist, well-drained soil. ## Maintenance The RHS assigns this cultivar to pruning group 2. Keep its roots cool and moist, shade the base, and prune lightly after the first flush rather than cutting the whole vine back. It works on a wall, fence, or trellis where the large flowers remain visible.
