About Madame Julia Correvon Red Clematis

Clematis 'Madame Julia Correvon' is a deciduous, fast-growing climber with deep claret-red flowers and creamy-yellow stamens. It flowers from midsummer into early autumn, bringing a long display to a trellis, obelisk, fence, or border support. ## Flowers and growth The [RHS Plants profile](https://www.rhsplants.co.uk/plants/_/clematis-madame-julia-correvon/classid.927/sku.pl00001663/) identifies this named cultivar, describes its claret-red star-shaped flowers, and places its flowering from midsummer to early autumn. The [Clematis on the Web cultivar record](https://clematisontheweb.org/clemdetail/?dbkey=574) lists it in the Viticella group, gives an approximate mature height of 2.5–3 m, and records wine-red flowers with purplish shading and yellow anthers. Its name is specifically ‘Madame Julia Correvon’; several similar spellings are recorded there as incorrect. ## Siting Give the vine a strong support and moist, fertile, well-drained soil. The RHS recommends a sunny position with roots kept cool and shaded, such as by low plants or a mulch layer. It can also be grown in a large container with suitable support. ## Maintenance This cultivar flowers on new growth and is treated as a Group 3 clematis. In early spring, cut the previous year’s stems back to a pair of strong buds about 15–20 cm above the ground, following the [RHS care guidance](https://www.rhsplants.co.uk/plants/_/clematis-madame-julia-correvon/classid.927/sku.pl00001663/).
