Clematis montana var. grandiflora, also called white anemone clematis, is a vigorous deciduous climber with single white flowers and trifoliate foliage. Its flowers appear in late spring and early summer, with occasional later blooms.
## Flowers and growth
The [Royal Horticultural Society profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/210221/clematis-montana-var-grandiflora-m/details) describes pure white flowers up to 7 cm across and lists mature dimensions of 8–12 m high by 2.5–4 m wide. The RHS also lists Clematis montana 'Grandiflora' and Clematis 'Grandiflora' as synonyms. This is a large vine, so choose a sturdy support with enough room for its eventual spread.
## Siting
Plant in moisture-retentive but well-drained soil, in full sun or partial shade. Keep the roots and base cool and shaded with nearby low plants or a layer of pebbles, while allowing the flowering growth to receive light. The RHS recommends planting the crown slightly below soil level to encourage shoots from below ground.
## Maintenance
This montana clematis belongs to pruning Group 1. It flowers on older stems, so avoid routine hard pruning; if it needs to be contained, prune after flowering in late spring. The [RHS Group One guide](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/clematis/group-one-pruning-guide) explains how to shorten vigorous plants while preserving the next year’s flower buds.
