About Moonfleet Clematis

Moonfleet is the trade designation for the large-flowered clematis selection ‘Evipo046’. Its pale lilac-blue flowers open in summer and continue into autumn, bringing a cool-toned display to a trellis or other sturdy support. ## Flowers and growth The [RHS profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/300851/clematis-evipo046/details) identifies ‘Evipo046’ and records the late large-flowered group, whose deciduous climbers flower on current growth in summer and autumn. The [RHS International Clematis Register](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/pdfs/plant-register-supplements/clematis/4th-clematis-supplement.pdf) explicitly lists Moonfleet as the trade designation of ‘Evipo046’, rather than as a cultivar epithet. It describes upward-facing flowers about 18 cm wide, opening deep lilac-blue and maturing pale blue, with purple filaments fading lilac and purple-red anthers. Stems reach about 1.5–2 m. ## Siting Train the stems onto a trellis, fence, or similar support. Give the flowering growth sun or light shade while keeping the root zone cool and evenly moist; clematis generally perform best in fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil. The [RHS clematis guide](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/clematis) explains this root-shading and soil care. The existing 2 m height is consistent with the register’s upper estimate; its width remains unspecified by the exact-selection sources. ## Maintenance Tie in new stems as they grow. The exact-selection register says flowers open on current-year growth; the [RHS Group 3 guide](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/clematis/group-three-pruning-guide) recommends pruning this flowering type in late winter or early spring, cutting established stems back to the lowest healthy buds. Keep the root area shaded and water during dry spells while the plant establishes.
