About Mrs. Cholmondeley Clematis

Clematis ‘Mrs Cholmondeley’ is a vigorous, deciduous climber with large pale lavender-blue flowers, often opening from late spring into late summer. Its pale sepals are marked by prominent veins, adding detail to a wall, fence, or garden support. ## Flowers and size The [RHS plant profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/59413/clematis-mrs-cholmondeley-el/details) describes single flowers up to 20 cm wide and mature dimensions of 1.5–2.5 m high by 0.5–1 m wide. The present 2.5 m height and 0.7 m width fall within those source ranges. The corresponding display ranges are about 4.9–8.2 ft high and 1.6–3.3 ft wide. ## Siting Grow in full sun or partial shade in moist but well-drained soil. The RHS recommends keeping the roots and plant base cool and shaded, and planting the crown a few centimetres below soil level. A trellis or other sturdy support gives the climbing stems room to develop; the RHS lists wall-side borders as a suitable garden position. ## Maintenance This is a Group 2 clematis. In late winter or early spring, remove dead or weak growth and lightly shape the plant, preserving healthy stems for the first flush; avoid cutting it hard each year. Keep the root zone cool and evenly moist, especially during dry weather, while avoiding waterlogged soil.
