About Nelly Moser Clematis

Clematis ‘Nelly Moser’ is a deciduous climber with large rosy-lilac flowers marked by a carmine stripe. It flowers in late spring and early summer, then often produces another flush in early autumn; the flower color holds best with some protection from strong afternoon sun. ## Flowers and size The [RHS profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/57420/clematis-nelly-moser-el/details) describes flowers up to 20 cm wide and a mature height of 1.5–2.5 m with a spread of 0.5–1 m. The [Missouri Botanical Garden Plant Finder](https://www.missouribotanicalgarden.org/PlantFinder/PlantFinderDetails.aspx?isprofile=0&pt=16&taxonid=244347) gives a competing height range of 6–10 ft and spread of 6–10 ft. The existing 3 m height is consistent with the Missouri range and is retained; the 0.7 m width is within the RHS range. The labels use the exact RHS ranges, converted to feet. ## Siting Choose full sun or partial shade, with the flowering stems in light and the roots kept cool and shaded. Use fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil and a trellis, fence, or wall support. The RHS lists wall-side borders as a suitable position. ## Maintenance This is a Group 2 clematis. In late winter or early spring, remove dead or weak growth and lightly shape the stems, preserving healthy old growth for the first flowers. Keep the root zone evenly moist through dry periods and avoid waterlogged soil.
