About Niobe Red Clematis

Clematis ‘Niobe’ is a deciduous climber valued for deep ruby-red flowers with contrasting golden stamens. Flowers open from late spring into early autumn, with the strongest display through summer, and the stems can be trained over a wall, fence, or trellis. ## Flowers and size The [RHS cultivar profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/96069/clematis-niobe-el/details) describes single, deep velvety ruby-red flowers and lists mature dimensions of 1.5–2.5 m high by 0.5–1 m wide. The [Missouri Botanical Garden Plant Finder](https://www.missouribotanicalgarden.org/PlantFinder/PlantFinderDetails.aspx?%22=&taxonid=244348) gives a competing height range of 8–12 ft and spread of 6–10 ft. The live 2.5 m height is within both sources; the full RHS ranges are used for the display labels. Width is not entered numerically in the catalog, so no point estimate is added. ## Siting Grow in full sun or partial shade in fertile, medium-moisture, well-drained soil. Clematis roots benefit from cool shade while the upper stems receive light. The RHS lists wall-side borders and recommends moisture-retentive but well-drained soil. ## Maintenance This cultivar is in pruning Group 2. In late winter or early spring, remove dead or weak stems and lightly shape the remaining growth, retaining healthy stems for flowering. Water during dry spells while keeping the root zone evenly moist; avoid waterlogged soil.
